Welcome

Welcome to this new blog. We are a group of friends who love to read, and who love to discuss what they read. We're not hoping to burst on the blogging scene with something new. Instead, we just like to keep track of all the highs and lows we encounter. And include some healthy discussion whilst we're on it. Feel free to join in!

Good to be here! What shall we start with? xx

Well, I'm about to start on About A Boy but - great thought the film is - I don't think it's the most inspiring story to start with. I finished I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings the other day, which I might write about at some point, and is very recommendable anyway. Other than that, I guess no one would be interested in Parallel Programming In C With MPI And OpenMP?

I really like About A Boy- I love the way it's written. And I've never read I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings so I cannot comment. But anyway, what sort of books can I write about? I've read lots of Christian books recently, or is this all fiction style books?

Right, I shall start reading About A Boy tonight! Don't expect any miracles concerning my reading speed though... I shall lend you ...Caged Bird... when you're here so you can review that later!

I'd like to focus on fiction - Christian books are more than welcome, but it would be great if we could relate them to other books we're reading, in the same way it would be great if we could link the fictional works to christianity!

Okay, I'll start reading About A Boy once I've been paid on Friday. I'm part way through another few books at the moment [Ulysses (although that's been ongoing for two years) only 4 chapters from the end!!- Women In Love, Life of Pi, Through the Dark Woods] ... I'll endeavour to finish at least two of those in the next two weeks to create some kind of closure ... Just started Philip Yancey's book on Prayer at long last too!

I have my AAB copy now, courtesy of Oxfam in Newington yesterday. A review shouldn't be too far off then...

Also picked up Notes On A Scandal as I'm going to see the film next week & I want to know the story before I see the film so it's not obscured in my head as I read it. That's by Zoe Heller & the film has the oh-so-wonderful Judi Dench, Bill Nighy & Cate Blanchett in, so if anybody fancies reading that one next..? (What made me happy was a comparison between Heller's style in Notes.. to Evelyn Waugh, amongst others, for social satire. Hope it lives up to that then).
